"Measurement of particle acceleration in supernova remnants" (Colloquium)

Dimitra Atri (Blue Marble Space Institute for Science)

Monday December 09, 2013
4:00pm - 5:00pm
Malott Hall, 2074
Supernovae are the best candidates where galactic cosmic rays could be produced. Direct observations of these accelerated charged particles are not possible because of the deflection by the galactic magnetic fields. However, in certain conditions, these particles can decay to gamma rays. I will discuss how the energy spectrum of gamma rays can be used to measure particle acceleration based on our knowledge of particle interactions at high energies.
