This course will examine important developments and issues in African American history from slavery to the present. We will focus on the black experience under slavery, the fight for emancipation and the black response to social, political and economic oppression from the collapse of Reconstruction to contemporary America. We will discuss the failures of Reconstruction, the rise of Jim Crow, African Americans in the two World Wars, the New Deal, the modern Civil Rights Movement, Affirmative Action, and the election of the first black president of the United States.
